Alegria y Felicidad
Christmas consumes the country:
cars dressed as reindeer
sit in traffic jams,
inflatable snowmen
lie flat, dead
by day
and like white bulbous vampires
rise from their grassy coffins
at night.
Merry Pringles!
(30% Mas!)
Pooki had her puppies
Meringue screams
Bachata croons
into hearts
ache yearlong for this season
Fruit stalls full
apples from Washington
grapes dangle from roofs.
Here just as there
Christmas consumes
fruit from far off lands.
Shopping carts full of
exotic booze,
Bailey's in a red bow.
Along the highway
MaryandJoseph threewisemen babyJesusinthemanger and Shepherdswatching
the endless line of cars
grinding, honking, whistling their way to the beach.
The nativity scene blesses
all who pass:
“May death die
for these enchanted weeks
this time at the apex
when there is no time
for accidents”.
You miss parties
to go to parties.
You put your shoulder
to the wheel.
You sway your hips
to keep the Christmas
machine running at full throttle
the speakers clipping
as eardrums burst.
“Feliz Navidad!
Prospero año y”
for good measure
just a little more
“felicidad”.
